Happy Day, Peruvian teacher.

Today, July 6, is Teacher’s Day, a day in which we commemorate teachers’ work – of all educational levels – in Peru.

Teachers’ Day is a celebration that touches the heart of each of us since we have all been students at some point in our lives. However fragile or worn out, we all have in our memory – the name of some teacher who helped us discover our path, even from our first years of life. This honorable profession, exercised with love and knowledge to transform lives, provides us with the best legacy that human beings can have and the best instrument to change our environment: education.

During this COVID – 19 pandemic, we have witnessed our teachers’ enormous commitment and how they managed to face innumerable challenges that this situation has imposed on them, problems like programming distance classes, virtual communication, learning new and “modern” digital programs. Maintaining the interest of their students and, without a doubt, the very activities of the home that must be carried out under the tedious – but necessary – context of the health emergency.

For this, and many other reasons, we would like to extend a warm hug and congratulations to all our teachers, since our motivation is supporting and promoting the education of the children of the Andes of Peru. Without a doubt, a task would not be possible without the effort of real teachers that transmitting the illusion of knowledge has become an example and synonym of hope for children who are preparing to live in a better society.

The title “Father.”

“It is not flesh and blood, but the heart that makes us fathers and sons.”
-Johann Friedrich Schiller

The month of June reminds us of an important date: Father’s Day. A day on which we celebrate, thank, and praise the fathers – or father figures – who surround our lives. And, even though we are going through difficult times due to the current health emergency, we will never stop remembering this fabulous day and celebrating it with joy and in the best way.

However, what does it mean to have received the title of father?

Like most of us, inevitably when we think of the meaning of “being a father,” we remember the image and role – very widespread – of a provider who satisfies all the material needs of the home, working double shifts so that “the children don’t lack anything.” While this is a recognizable act of love, we perhaps overlook one of the most important values of this title: doing what is necessary to enjoy the unique experience of watching children grow.
The reality is that “being a father” is much more than having a child. To be a Father is to finally understand the meaning of unconditional love, which is expressed with more than just words. To be a Father means to accept with joy to wear a hero’s suit every day, all your life, for your smiles, your well-being, your tranquility. To be a Father is to have someone by your side for life.
For this reason – and many more – that at Sol Alpaca, we recognize and celebrate the vital responsibility and work carried out by all those who received this valuable title. As examples to follow, collaborators, protectors and friends, and the endless number of roles they play day by day do not rest in our lives.

Introducing Mallkini.

A brand with a purpose

In 2019, at Sol Alpaca, we had completed 15 years of maintaining and strengthening our commitment to take a rich and millenary textile tradition to new horizons. Through effort, respect for nature, and passion for excellence, we express in art the finest fibers in the world: Alpaca and Vicuña. The energy and commitment of the members of our team has allowed us to obtain a vast experience in our field, which translates and manifested in a new adventure that we want you to know: Mallkini. This brand seeks to create a robust social impact through education.

Today, we present you as an active, curious, and responsible brand. Through Mallkini, we are committed to focusing our efforts on the responsibilities of our business through social, environmental and sustainable development commitment; an example of this is our promise to develop children’s education in the Andean highlands.

Our starting point:
The education of the children of Mirasol, a boarding school that was created to provide quality education, in the best possible conditions, to the children of the alpaca herders of Rancho Mallkini, and surrounding communities, to leave behind the difficulties, as well as the long and cold walks to get to their schools.

At Mallkini, we see education as a source of transformation.
We are also inspired by a natural sanctuary of Alpacas, located in the heart of the Andes: Rancho Mallkini. In this beautiful place, a worthy representative of the Andean and Alpaca world, you will be able to learn about the process and breeding of the Alpaca, live adventures, explore, among several other activities.

How do we want to help?
Very simply. All your purchases will be used to support new projects to help the children of the Mirasol School.
We will donate a percentage of your purchase to make the projects and needs of Escuela Mirasol a reality to improve our children’s education and living conditions. For example, the construction of new educational environments, study material, warm clothing, food, etc.

Join the team
At Mallkini, we want to build a community that shares our goals, interests, and commitment to making the world a better place through education. If you are reading this: THANK YOU! Now we know that, like us, you believe in the purpose of Mallkini and the enormous impact that education has on society.

Together, we can work to build a better future for the children of Mirasol School, their families, and communities.
Join us and share our purpose! Let’s change the world together!

Knitted with Solidarity

A social initiative for the future of our country.

Like in several countries in the world, today, the population of Peru lives under a climate of uncertainty and concern about the situation generated by COVID-19, as well as the effects it will have on the country. The measures taken by the Peruvian government, like necessary social distancing, have not only forced people to “reinvent” themselves and redefine their daily activities and routines. It also reinforces and determine the right role of companies in society and how they can act in the face of this emergency.

Today more than ever, at Sol Alpaca and Mallkini, we understood the importance of helping and providing a solution for our community and society where we operate. We are trying to look for the well-being of the families that make up these communities, as well as our co-workers, clients, and the population in general.

For this reason, during this period of social distancing and mandatory quarantine, we have provided more than 250 bio-security kits. These include essential and necessary elements for the health personnel, like masks, nitrile gloves, bio-security suits, etc. To different hospitals and COVID centers in Arequipa and Cuzco.
However, it is time to “go beyond” and increase our actions and range of support.

As members of the Sol Alpaca and Mallkini team want to get involved with society and our community. So that together we can serve it, seeking to be a common support element for our country.

To achieve this objective, we have decided to put into practice what we know best. Create beautiful garments made of alpaca fiber and, through our Knitted with Solidarity products, to generate funds to contribute to the medical and health personnel. Who daily faces this growing threat, treating patients with COVID – 19, besides taking care of each of us.
We will donate 50% of the sales of our line “Knitted with Solidarity” to support the health personnel from different hospitals and COVID centers in Peru. So that they can keep working safely and continue their gigantic work.
Staying at home is no longer enough.
Peru needs us.
Let’s work together to make it happen.

Support here!

To Mario Amano.

Resilience involves having the ability to adapt and react in the face of adverse conditions or situations.

The recent passing of Mario Amano Watanabe indeed requires an enormous display of resilience in order to cope with the profound sorrow it has brought us.

Mario was born to Yoshitaro Amano and Rosa Watanabe, who worked arduously throughout their lives, especially by means of the Amano Museum, to recover and promote knowledge about Peru’s cultural heritage, particularly the exquisite pre-Hispanic textile tradition.

This love for our culture was inherited by Mario, who devoted his entire life to a cultural and philanthropic vocation: to continue the exceptional investigation and conservation work begun by his noble father.

At Michell we had the privilege of working with Mario Amano in his tireless efforts to preserve the priceless family legacy, the Amano Museum, an immense heritage for Peru and mankind.  We bore witness to his dreams and we had the honour of helping to fulfil some of them, such as the inauguration of an absolutely perfect branch of the Amano Museum in Arequipa, an example of Mario’s human profile and his love for all Peruvian things.

We express our most sincere condolences to the Amano family and our solidarity with its members.  Mario Amano has earned our eternal appreciation for having continued to make Peru a birthplace of culture, for illuminating us with that passion for what is ours and for extending us his cheerful and enlightened friendship which will accompany us much farther than any adversity.

We thank you infinitely, Mario Amano; your leaving was sorrowful, your memory monumental!

The Amano Museum was founded in 1964 by the initiative of the Japanese businessman Yoshitaro Amano, to preserve the cultural heritage so that it can be admired for next generations to come. Located in one of the first buildings that were designed as a museum, it soon became one of the most important exhibition spaces for Peruvian Textile art.

All you need is love

The planet Earth is 4500 million years old; and how old is the human race?  About 140 thousand years.  At one time in history, they became well acquainted and developed together.  We draw our inspiration from nature to create an infinite array of things; yet we ignore those cries for help, the deluges, the droughts, the hurricanes and the wildfires.

At what point did we stop loving our planet and her nature?

The root crisis is not global warming, destruction of the natural environment or excesses committed by farmers; rather, our emotional amnesia has made us forget to love what is most important: nature and our Mother Earth.

Thus it is that in February, the month of love, that sentiment which drives behaviour and thoughts, we wish to help recover of our love of nature.

solalpaca-spring-light-alpaca-women-clothing

Spring Breeze, our new collection, is inspired by harmony with nature and the natural environment, and makes elegant and delicate use of the finest fibres: super baby alpaca, silk, baby alpaca and, for the first time, bamboo, which is a new, environment-friendly, natural textile fibre.

Spring Breeze beckons you to experience nature, to move in unison with her and, through the varied designs, colours and fibres she encompasses, to express love for Mother Earth.

In order to win back nature, all you need is love.  You, too, can recover, reaffirm and express that love with Spring Breeze.

Let nature pamper you; and feel good.

Let nature pamper you and FEEL GOOD!

The mankind–nature duality has always been fundamental to Andean culture. This perfect harmony with the natural environment was the inspiration for our Spring Breeze collection which uses extremely fine Baby Alpaca, renowned the world over for its silkiness, in a sophisticated blend with bamboo fiber to create products with a luxurious softness and texture which allow one to experience nature as though it were a gentle spring breeze.

Sol Alpaca light shawl for women

Sol Alpaca is incorporating bamboo fiber in its collections for the first time.  This is a new, fine natural fiber which is friendly to the environment and is obtained from short-cycle crops of high ecological value.

Experiencing nature and being able to move freely with it produces a unique sensation; cardigans, shawls, capes and a variety of garments and accessories brought to you by Spring Breeze all offer, through their varied designs and colors, this unique way to let yourself be pampered by nature.

Centuries ago, Pizarro´s secretary wrote a letter to the Spanish king, Charles V, revealing the first contact between the Spanish Conquerors and a civilization with a culture of ancient traditions, the Inca Empire.

The letter describes the cargo of the Inca trading raft captured in 1527:
